Shenandoah Valley Vacation Information:
There is no better way to get to know the area of the Shenandoah
Valley, and to enjoy the beauty of the natural environment than
to walk and hike among the many trails that are found throughout
the area. Historically,
the Shenandoah National Park was set aside because the scenery
and natural environment is not only spectacular, but is also
unique to this part of the continent. You’ll see vegetation
here that you won’t find anywhere else. And the vistas
that await you at the end of the various trails are astounding.
The Shenandoah Park itself is long and narrow- so you’re
always fairly close to the boundaries of the park and of civilization.
All things being considered, it’s a fairly difficult place
top get lost in. Signs throughout the park let you know if you’re
close to a Park boundary and whether or not you’re on
a hiking trail or a hiking/horseback riding trail. Because of
the safety of the relativity of the Park, it’s not surprising
that Shenandoah is a favorite vacation destination for families
who love the outdoors.
The main, and by far the most famous trail of all within the
Shenandoah National Park, is the Appalachian Trail. This amazing
trail measures 2,100 miles in length and runs all the way from
Georgia to Maine; moving through 14 states and 10 state and
national parks in all. If you’re planning a trek on the
Appalachian Trail- know that it can take up to half a year to
complete! For the most part, besides the sheer length, the hike
is a gentle one- and can be done by veteran and rookie hikers
alike.
Regardless of whether you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail
or one of the many other trails throughout the Park, make sure
you prepare like a savvy hiker. That means bringing plenty of
liquid to drink, food to eat, and safety equipment. Of course
a map is always a good idea too; especially if you’re
not carrying a compass. Maps detailing the trail and the Shenandoah
Park area in general can be obtained at the entrance of the
Park. Besides the Appalachian Trail, many of the hikes can be
done, roundtrip in an hour or so.
